“WE PROCLAIM HIM, ADMONISHING AND TEACHING WITH ALL WISDOM SO WE CAN PRESENT EVERYONE PERFECT IN CHRIST.” COLOSSIANS 1:28
MODULE 1 LESSON 2
Embrace Your Traditional Training: Take What you Like and Leave the Rest
In lesson 1, we came to terms with traditional yoga practices. Not every part of the practice is beneficial for our Christian walk. However, we need to take a realistic view and inventory the things about our practice that were good.
Not everything we learned in our traditional training needs to be avoided. We can take what we like and leave the rest behind. Let’s be grateful that there are some wonderful components that we can take from our traditional training and blend with the PerfectFit Christian style.
PerfectFit Christian style focuses on the mental and physical benefits of the practice. Therefore the anatomy and alignment portion of your traditional training, the science-based aspects, cueing, adjustments, and types of breathing techniques are important foundations to being a highly successful and well trained Christian yoga instructor.
In the PerfectFit teacher training program, we tweak traditional yoga's spiritual side to be compatible with our Christian faith and values. This is the beauty of the PerfectFit curriculum. We embrace what God gave us with our 200-hour traditional training. We can think of this as helping us be good stewards of our money and time when we took our traditional training. Make no mistake, God is frugal, and He wastes nothing. So let’s adopt the same attitude and uncover what works with our traditional training.
What to Keep from your Traditional Training
The physical execution of poses, what we call Asana.
Sequencing.
Cueing.
Safe alignment and form.
Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biomechanics.
The style of yoga you were trained in. Possible examples include Vinyasa, Power, Yin, Slow Flow, Restorative.
Sanskrit- Generally, Sanskrit is okay with the names of poses. However, if you do not know what the Sanskrit word for a pose means or translates to, it is best to avoid it. Some Sanskrit names of poses translate to a false god's name. Some Christian students feel uncomfortable using the words because they are concerned with the meaning behind them. If you do use Sanskrit in a Christian class, make sure to translate the word to English.
Pranayama or breathwork.
Relaxation techniques like aromatherapy or other therapies.
All specialty courses you were trained such as Kids, Seniors, Trauma, Therapeutic, etc.
Write for Insight-Journal
Make a list of the positive ways your traditional yoga training worked for you.
Please post your list to the Facebook group by Thursday. Please comment and interact with your fellow trainees on their list of positives.
Now let’s take personal inventory. A personal inventory is when we look at what we excel and are good at and the areas we need to improve upon and grow.
Based on the above list, are there any areas you feel you need to continue to grow in to become an excellent instructor for Christ? Remember, part of the PerfectFit mission is to help you become a God-honoring, impactful, highly trained, Christian yoga instructor that changes lives and has a thriving business.
Looking at the list above, what do you feel you do well?
