“WE PROCLAIM HIM, ADMONISHING AND TEACHING WITH ALL WISDOM SO WE CAN PRESENT EVERYONE PERFECT IN CHRIST.” COLOSSIANS 1:28
MODULE 2 LESSON 1
Why Scripture?
As discussed in the introduction, there are three key components to the PerfectFit Christian Yoga Teacher Training.
In this lesson, we discuss the use of scripture for our yoga practice.
Why Scripture?
The theologian Martin Luther believed Christians should ascribe to the Greek term, “sola scriptura,” which means scripture is our supreme authority in all spiritual matters.
Scripture is the living word of God, equipping Christians in all areas of life.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Scripture pairs perfectly with yoga postures, breathing techniques, and Christian meditation. It creates a spiritually safe environment and allows Christians to feel at ease and comfortable when they practice. It anchors their spirits to that of Christ, making the time worshipful and intimate.
Scriptural use in yoga class is powerful, having a profound effect on students. When used in practice, it changes our students' attitudes, perspectives, and outlook on life. It changes their hearts and leads them to an abundant life in Christ. This is for God’s glory. To use the practice of yoga to draw His children to Him. (John 15:8)
As an instructor, you have the freedom to use scripture to cover a variety of topics or themes. And because our God is limitless, so are the possibilities to creating scriptural themes. In all reality, you can create countless themes based on God’s word. You could literally have a different thematic for each class throughout the year! Isn’t that exciting?
With this in mind, let’s get started!
Call to Action:
Memorize 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
Begin to make a Master List of possible themes from the Bible you could teach with. This will help you get started when we go to add a corresponding scripture to the Biblical theme.
Some examples include: Faith, Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Truth, Humility, Blessing, etc. Remember, there are numerous examples we can draw from.
Be assured! There is no right or wrong answer. If it’s a theme from the Bible, it’s applicable!
When selecting what version of scripture to use, try to stay with ESV, NIV, NLT as these are referenced most. The Message can have some beautiful translations that are quite lovely in a yoga class.
Keep this exercise lighthearted and fun as you co-create with Christ and making this a worshipful and joy-filled time.
